Division of Pulmonology

   The lung is responsible for controlling the circulatory system and metabolism through various hormone secretions. It is the largest organ in our body and has the most abundant blood vessels.

   The respiratory system consists of mainly three parts. The first is the upper air way which starts from the mouth/nose and the lower air way which is below the neck such as bronchus, and lungs. The second is the thoracic cavity that surrounds the chest. The last is the mediastinum which includes blood vessels, nerves and heart structures at the center of the chest. During inspiration, the respiratory system sends oxygen to the lungs and melts them with blood vessels to deliver to different parts of the body. During expiration, the respiratory system emits carbon dioxide out of the body.

   In case this respiratory system has any abnormality, the symptoms which are specific to the respiratory organs, such as cough, phlegm, respiratory difficulty, chest pain or hemoptysis, and various systemic symptoms including heat, body weight loss and weakness can occur. The Division of Pulmonology aims to diagnose, treat and further prevent the causative disease of the above symptoms.

   Causative factors that can provoke the diseases in the respiratory organs are very diverse. Division of pulmonology commonly aims to treat the following diseases: infection, allergic diseases (rhinitis, asthma, various eosinophilia, anaphylaxis etc.), respiratory tumors, rheumatoid pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, environmental and occupational pulmonary diseases, pleural and mediastinal diseases, sleep apnea and other almost severe diseases..

   Since there are very diverse types of diseases, the methods which are used for the diagnosis and treatment are also diverse. Systemic conditions are often first observed in the lung in many cases. For this reason, division of pulmonology is closely associated with other clinical areas and it also plays a crucial role in the consultation for surgery.

   For the diagnosis, division of pulmonology basically performs blood test, sputum test, microbial test and lung cancer test, on top of interviews and physical examination. Furthermore, it also performs routine bronchoscopy procedure for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. With the use of the state-of-the-art modalities, such as computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the methods of nuclear medicine, division of pulmonology performs the diagnosis and treatment.

   The following tests are conducted on allergy and special respiratory system allergies.

[Skin reaction allergy test] Tests to identify causative antigen substances of allergic conjunctivitis, rhinitis, asthma, and atopy

[Pulmonary function test room] pulmonary function test, bronchodilator reaction test, bronchial provocation test, pulmonary diffusing capacity test, cardiopulmonary function test

   In addition to the above tests, various educational sessions are conducted in regards to various respiratory diseases, anti-smoking, early check-up of lung cancer and use of inhalants.

   Furthermore, lectures on allergy are conducted annually for the community and workshops on intensive medical care are held for the medical staff.
