Robotic Thyroid Operation

Robotic thyroid operations are superb in a sense that patients need not to worry about scars from thyroid operations. Furthermore, researches have revealed that robotic thyroid operations are just as effective as conventional thyroid operations.
  1. What is the malignant disease with the highest onset rate for women? Thyroid cancer
   The rate of thyroid cancer has dramatically increased recently and it has been identified as the most common malignancy amongst women since 2004. Following gastric cancer, it is the second most common in the entire population of both men and women. Due to technological advancement, medical institutions are able to identify small-sized thyroid carcinoma during the early stage.
  1. Do small cancers require operations?
   An experiment had been conducted in Japan where medical staff did not conduct operations for thyroid cancer patients with thyroid carcinoma size below 1cm. However a lot advanced nations such as the U.S. and European countries insist that operations are required for all thyroid cancers, regardless of its size. The reason behind is that thyroid cancers have high recurrence rates and lymph nodes, which are responsible for recurrence of the disease, can cause critical diseases.
  1. Conventional operation vs Robotic operation
   Thyroid cancer operation is the Procedure of removing all thyroid tissues including tumor and lymph nodes which may contain thyroid cancer cells. The most commonly used method is the Operation through the skin incision at the front side of the neck. This conventional method has been used throughout the world for over 100 years as it is safe and effective. However, this method leaves a scar at the front side of the neck.

   Robotic thyroid operation using da Vinci surgical system is free of scars. Da Vinci Robot is a high-tech operation robot created by adapting robotics to medical science. Surgeons can use the da Vinci Robot to operate under 15x magnified 3D-view without leaving any scars and in a precise manner. By using robot arms, surgeons are able to operate in areas that human hands are unable to reach, free of tremor. Incision sites are unexposed area and radically small, which can hardly be identified with the naked-eye. However, its costs are relatively higher as compared to the conventional operation.

  1. When can robot operations be conducted?
   Aged patients with natural Skin creases on their neck have less advantage in expensive robot operations as The scar may be blended well with the skin creases and the color of the scar becomes lighter wWith time. However, young patients without Skin crease on their neck can benefit more from robotic operations as these patients have relatively more tendency to have vivid hypertrophic scar or keloid when operated by conventional surgery. Although robotic operations have advantages, there are situations where conventional operations are more effective. The patient and the doctor in-charge should discuss the matter and decide with consideration to patients' preference.

   Robot operations can be conducted for the following situations in general.
  1. Benign thyroid nodule less than 6cm in size
  2. Thyroid cancer without extensive perithyroidal infiltration or lymph node metastasis
  3. Follicular neoplasm


Surgical operations are preferred for the following situations.
  1. Benign thyroid nodule larger than 6cm in size
  2. Thyroid cancer With extensive perithyroidal infiltration
  3. Thyroid cancer with Extensive lymph node metastasis
  4. Location of thyroid cancer is not adequate for robot operations
  5. Patients with history of neck or breast operations
